On June 9th and 10th, ATTHD coaches Jason High, LC Davis and Deron Carlis visited Camp WIN, held at Avila University, to introduce over 200 girls, ages 6-12 to the sport of wrestling!
Camp WIN is an annual girls sports camp put on by WIN for KC, a non-profit under the Kansas City Sports Commission whose mission is to empower girls and women through sports. ATTHD was honored to coach one of the 16 different sports the campers participated in throughout the 4-day camp.
While this is only the second year wrestling has been offered at the camp, WIN for KC director Lisa Diven says it’s one of the most popular sports among the girls.
I think because it’s something new…and they get to play a little game where they compete against each other. I have never seen as much enthusiasm. I was so excited and surprised at how much the girls wanted to jump in on the mat, wanted to take each other on – and then the whole rest of the group was chanting for them. It was really exciting.
We look forward to Camp WIN next year! In the meantime, check out our youth wrestling classes we offer year-round, and remember – wrestling is for EVERYONE: girls and boys, men and women, all ages!
